ABOUT
CryptoMob is a First Nations-led social impact project closing the digital and socio-economic divide by building an inclusive web3 economy. The experimental research-based project provides educational and technological assistance to creators. It explores the latest digital web3 technologies to transparently authenticate art against forgery, fostering a fair and trustworthy marketplace where cultural heritage is appreciated and valued.
CryptoMob Storyline
This project was initiated in 2018 in response to a parliamentary inquiry revealing that over 70% of Indigenous Art sold as souvenirs in Australia was counterfeit, harming artists, communities, and consumers alike. Particular attention was given to addressing the complex socio-economic implications the fake art practice had on communities. First Nations community leader, Les Delaforce and digital technologies researcher and educator Dr Andrzej Gwizdalski (University of Western Australia) proposed leveraging blockchain technologies as a solution to authenticate First Nations artworks. They presented their findings at several conferences in 2019. The project gained momentum when renowned Australian First Nations artist Tyrown Waigana joined, contributing hand-drawn elements for the iconic CryptoMob avatar and creating first known Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island generative NFT Art Collection – one of the world’s most unique ever.
The CryptoMob Founding Collection, features 8,888 unique avatars, many of which were manually composed by the team and a small batch was pre-minted for testing. After keeping secret in a small insider community, the Collection was officially presented at the WAWEB3 Next Gen Event during the West Tech Fest in December 2023 and is currently in its Beta stage for extensive testing in real world conditions.
In 2024, the project expanded its reach at the international WAEB3 conference, connecting with First Nations artists globally who face similar challenges in the digital art space. Currently work is underway to further expand the educational program, build a digital assets marketplace, and plan for building the green DePIN (sustainable Decentralised Physical Infrastructure Network) for sovereign ownership and community governance of the project.
